Arcus Animus
Responsive Kinetic Installation
Muncie, IN
Built by An Inconvenient Studio in collaboration with Canadian Architect Phillip Beesley and Brad Rothenberg from the Pratt Institute, Arcus Animus is a kinetic installation constructed of mainly acrylic, bamboo, and mylar. It is housed in the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University.
After construction, we hosted an opening in which we invited the inhabitants of the building to tell us what they thought. The true meaning behind the piece was a mystery to most visitors, but it certainly did its job which was to creat awareness and interest in fabrication techniques and emerging responsive technologies.
Arcus
A dense and horizontal roll cloud or wedge-shaped accessory cloud, sometimes appearing ragged and turbulent.
Animus
The basic impulses or instincts which govern one's actions; a feeling of enmity, animosity, or ill-will; the masculine aspect of the feminine psyche or personality.
Arcus Animus consists of a scaffold of suspended kinetic acrylic meshwork, populated by secondary light-weight mylar expanded textile layers. The installation self adjusts based on the human proximity
